The relationship between you and your counsellor is one of the most important aspects of therapy. It is a space where you can feel safe, understood, and accepted just as you are.
In counselling, this connection allows you to explore your experiences openly, without judgment. When trust and understanding are present, it becomes easier to discuss what has been weighing on you and to make sense of what is happening in your life.
The best outcomes in therapy come when it feels like a collaborative partnership. And you are always encouraged to share how the process feels for you. It is completely natural if it takes time to feel comfortable, as this is a normal part of beginning therapy.
Finding the right connection with a therapist can make all the difference. You deserve support that meets your needs, and taking the first step to connect can be the start of a powerful journey toward the life you want to live.
-
There is no set timeline for therapy because everyone’s journey is different. Some people come for just a few sessions to gain perspective, guidance, or get a kickstart toward their goals. Some find that around ten sessions is needed to address issues such as Anxiety. Some people find that ongoing sessions help them build on their progress, deepen self-understanding, and continue developing personal growth over time.
What matters most is finding a therapeutic rhythm that feels right for you. Talking openly with your counsellor about your hopes, goals, and timeframe can help shape the process so it fits your goals and where you are in life. Together, we can adjust the approach, celebrate progress, and make sure the work supports your needs and aspirations.
Therapy is a space focused on you, whether you are seeking a short-term boost, exploring longer-term growth, or maintaining the changes you’ve made, therapy is designed to support you in ways that feel meaningful and empowering.
-
You might be wondering whether counselling is something you really, need or if you should keep pushing through on your own. Many people seek support when life starts to feel heavier than usual, or when the weight of work, relationships, and personal challenges becomes overwhelming.
Counselling can be helpful if you’re feeling stuck, unsure of your next steps, or sensing that something needs to shift but not quite knowing where to begin. It’s a space to pause, reflect, and begin making steps in a direction that feels more aligned and supportive for you.
Therapy can be valuable if you are simply wanting to slow down and take a closer look at your life, to notice what is working well and what might need some adjusting. You do not have to be in crisis to benefit from counselling, therapy can provide an intentional space to support personal growth and to gain deeper insight into yourself and your relationships.
If any of this resonates, whether you are feeling weighed down, ready for change, or wanting to reconnect with yourself, counselling may be a meaningful next step. I’m here for you, when you are ready!
Frequently Asked Questions: Counselling Approaches
-
I use an integrative approach to counselling, drawing on several evidence-based therapies depending on what best supports you and your goals. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and other approaches and this allows our work together to be flexible, personalized, and responsive to your needs.
Each person’s experience is unique, and my role is to shape our work around your needs and goals, creating a space where you feel supported and empowered. Together, we focus on what matters most to you, helping you build greater awareness, resilience, and a sense of balance in your life. This approach ensures that the steps you take in therapy are meaningful, actionable, and fully aligned with the life and relationships you want to cultivate.
-
One approach I often use is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT supports you in exploring and clarifying your values or the things that matter most to you, and it can help you explore the parts of your life where you may feel stuck or disconnected. Instead of trying to get rid of difficult thoughts or feelings, ACT encourages learning new ways to relate to them with openness and awareness. Together, we will focus on building psychological flexibility, which means being better able to take meaningful action that aligns with your values even when challenges or uncomfortable emotions are present.
-
I also work with Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), based on the work of Dr. Sue Johnson. EFT provides space to explore and understand your emotions more deeply. Emotions often carry important information about your needs, what matters most to you, and past experiences that may still affect you. One of the main goals of EFT is to help you develop secure, emotionally responsive connections with yourself and others. In therapy, you will have the opportunity to safely experience and express your emotions, understand how they shape your patterns and relationships, and work toward creating healthier, more fulfilling ways of relating to yourself and those around you.
-
I also use Motivational Interviewing (MI), a collaborative, person-centered approach that helps you explore and strengthen your motivation for change. Together, we can look at the goals you want to set and the changes you hope to make. MI is especially helpful for anyone who wants to make changes in their life but may feel unsure, stuck, or ambivalent.
The approach helps you clarify your goals, and work through mixed feelings about change. I support you in turning that motivation into meaningful steps toward the goals that matter most, helping you move forward in a way that feels purposeful and truly your own.
-
Another approach I use is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This approach helps you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are connected and how you can change how you feel by changing your thoughts and behaviors. We can explore how patterns in these areas can influence your daily life, and we can identify unhelpful or limiting thinking and develop practical strategies and new perspectives that support meaningful change.
The idea behind CBT is that by adjusting the way we think and behave, we can create lasting shifts in how we feel. I can guide and support you throughout this process, helping you apply these insights in ways that are realistic, and manageable, so you can create meaningful change in your daily life.
